Ayurveda Alleviates Digestive Issues a case Study !!

Digestion is one of the most vital functions in the body. Ayurveda places high importance on having a healthy digestive function for increased energy levels, good immunity, internal balance, and the body’s overall health and well-being. But an imbalance of doshas in the body can severely harm the body’s Agni (digestive fire), hamper digestive function, and cause various other adverse symptoms.

The ancient science of Ayurveda helps alleviate such conditions safely, holistically, and effectively and strengthens the system to prevent such conditions in the future. Read the following case study to learn more about this natural approach to improving digestive health and overall quality of life.

Patient Details And Chief Complaints

The patient, a 47-year-old female from Talegaon, Pune, complained about digestive health issues in July 2018. the patient suffered from amalapitta (acid reflux), udar Daha (burning sensation in the abdomen), shir shool (headache), bloating, constipation, indigestion, and burning micturition (pain, burning, and discomfort during urination). Sometimes, the patient also faced uneasiness and vomiting.

A physical examination showed the following symptoms:

  • sarvang ushanata (heat/warmth of the body)
  • hastpad daha (burning sensation in hands & feet)
  • udarshool (abdominal colic) on palpitation
  • keshpatan (hair fall)
  • pad shoof kavachit (pedal edema)
  • dhoorbalya (fatigue)
  • bhram (confusion)

Three years prior to these complaints, the patient had her uterus removed due to fibroids (muscular/fibrous tumor in the walls of the uterus) and also suffered from thyroid imbalance. While the patient had suffered the mentioned digestive health issues for three years, they had worsened in the last six months.

Post-COVID, the patient also complained of symptoms like headache, insomnia, and body pain. The patient was also on antacid drugs along with a symptomatic line of treatment, but they showed no results in her system.

The Diagnosis

These conditions were caused by a leen pitta (aggravated pitta dosha) and dhatughat avastha (damage to the body’s vital tissues).

  • Thyroid imbalance plays a significant role in causing an imbalance in the doshas. In this patient’s case, the condition damaged her system over time, aggravated her pitta, and hampered her overall quality of life.
  • Additionally, due to the removal of her uterus, natural virechana (elimination) of the pitta was very difficult for the system. This further intensified problems.

Besides these two reasons, the patient was also on antacids and other conventional treatments for her symptoms, but they did not show any positive effects on her body. Often their consumption creates adverse health side effects that can worsen the existing conditions. These include flatulence, stomach cramps, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Prescribed Treatment

The treatment was first focused on the pachan of the pitta, followed by shodhan (purification). The patient was prescribed the following medications through the day:

  1. One tablet of Nrupati vallabh and two tablets of Amalaki with 20ml of Amruta Ghee; in the morning,
  2. Two tablets of Praval Panchamrit, Ajmodaadi, and Gokshuradi Guggul, each with 10ml of Drakshaasav, in the afternoon and evening,
  3. Two grams of Avippittakar Choorna, one gram of Haritaki, 60mg of Narikel Lavan, 120mg of Vang, and ½ tablet of Revand, at night.

The patient followed this line of treatment for two years, and all the symptoms were completely suppressed. Post-COVID, the patient complained of headache, insomnia, and body pain, and one tablet of Trailokya Vijaya Vati was added to this treatment regime to be consumed at night. This was prescribed for two months.

Outcomes

Within the first seven days of consuming the Ayurvedic medicine Trailokya Vijaya Vati, the patient reported a 50% reduction in body pain. After 21 days, not only was her pain completely alleviated, but the patient also had a good and sound sleep. The only side effect of the medication was pitta utklesh (mild acidity) which was easily managed by the prescription of Bhoonibadi Kwath.

Current status

The patient is now free from pain and acidity, shows no symptoms, and has stopped consuming the medications.

Why Was the Medication So Effective?

Ayurvedic doctors prescribe various essential herbs to improve digestive health and overall bodily function. Among them, Vijaya is one of the most revered and efficacious herbs. It is known for its direct, effective, and holistic action on the system. Hence, on consuming potent Vijaya-derived Ayurvedic formulations like the Trailokya Vijaya Vati, the herb binds with and activates the CB2 cannabinoid receptors of the ECS situated in the gut

Thus Vijaya directly influences the digestive organs’ function and other vital bodily processes. It is incredibly effective for easing all kinds of digestive health issues. Recent studies show that consuming Vijaya alleviates diarrhea and constipation among patients.

The herb activates CB1 receptors located in the regions of the brain that regulate pain and prevents the communication of pain signals in the body, effectively alleviating all kinds of pain in the system. A review of various studies indicates a significant decrease in chronic pain among patients consuming Vijaya.

In addition, Trailokya Vijaya Vati contains herbal ingredients that are easily tolerable and safe for consumption. Hence, unlike conventional prescription medications, it does not have any harmful side effects.
